how to import gotomeeting wmv recordings into camtasia studio
Update: Having seen many GoToWebinar users struggle to make their recorded webinars usable, I have started work on a service that will make posting events brain-dead easy.
If you’d like to learn more please visit WebinarFlow. I would love to speak with you about your needs in this area. If you are interested, please fill out the form and I will be in touch.
Situation: You record a Web meeting or webinar via GoToMeeting or GoToWebinar. You want to edit the resulting video in Camtasia Studio, and use that program to publish the video out to a variety of formats for the Web, iPods, etc.
Problem: Camtasia studio won’t allow you to import the Windows Media (WMV) file produced by GTM/GTW. It reports “Error: No codec available to render this file.”
Issue: Apparently the WMV files produced by GoToMeeting don’t contain the timing/keyframe information required to be properly rendered by Camtasia.
Solution: Use Microsoft’s Windows Media Stream Editor to repair the WMV file.
Download Windows Media Encoder from the Microsoft Web site. You won’t be using the main Windows Media Encoder application, but rather the Windows Media Stream Editor distributed with it. You can find it in your Start menu under “Windows Media”; it’s located in the Utilities subfolder. (You can also run the executable directly; it’s typically installed to C:\Program Files\Windows Media Components\Encoder\wmstreamedt.exe.
The steps are pretty simple: 1. Choose the WMV file by clicking “Add Source.” 2. Click Add. 3. Click “Choose File” to choose a name and location for your output file. And 4. Click Start.
That’s it. The conversion process in my case was pretty quick and unlike trying to mess with Windows Media Encoder itself, there are no compression or conversion settings to mess with and the resulting video quality is high.
Hey everyone. I followed the original directions exactly — BUT when I went to “Add source” and chose my GoToWebinar .wmv file I got this error… “the requested video codec is not installed on this system.” So, I can’t get any further. What to do???
Microsoft apparently has retired Windows Media Encoder:
“Windows Media Encoder is being retired by mid 2010. We invite you to try Expression Encoder Free Edition for your encoding needs.”
Downloaded Expression Encoder, but not sure where to proceed from here.
Nothing is EVER simple or easy, is it?
I found the Windows Media Encoder 9 with the Windows Media stream editor here:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Windows_Media_Encoder_9_Series.htm
Good Luck !!!
If I remember correctly, the only GTW WMV I tried was pulled right into Camtasia Mac without needing any further conversion. If you don't already have it you will need to download the Flip4Mac WMV codec.
Does this work on Mac, as well?
Thank you so much! After a million failed attempts, this solution put an end to my Camtasia misery. Rendered…success!
Thanks so much for sharing. You’ve just ended 6 very frustrating days of trying to get my GotoWebinar recorded file (saved as a standard WMV file) to render in Camtasia!
Sam,
This worked like a charm for me on a recorded webex meeting. Thank you SO MUCH!
Your site is great.
Do you by chance have any recommendations/info on Camtasia production settings for training videos to be streamed from ones website?
I’ve noticed my recorded webinars are good quality and basically fill my monitor. But I need to edit them and add a Table of Contents. I can’t seem to find good size/quality settings in Camtasia to produce them where they are not either too small for an instruction video, too blurry when full screen, or play choppy from the web.
I know it’s not your job to answer — but you seem to know so much about so much I figured it’s worth asking.
Thanks so much for the great tip on the wmv codec issue!
Laura
I used an application included with GoToMeeting called “g2mtranscoder” which solved the problem for me. More detailed explanation here: http://www.benlittler.com/?p=24
You are a life saver! This worked great.
FYI, I found the correct link for Part 2 here:

Thanks for the post Glenn,
I’ve already recorded a very important presentation with gotoWebinar but in the middle the speaker messed up and I need to edit out that part. Can I load the presentation back in the software and save as you suggest? Camtasia just won’t let me edit-give me no codec error.
Thanks,
Mande
Sam,
Excellent post and it saved my day after hours wasted trying to get this to work.
Glenn,
I was moments away from cancelling my gotowebinar subscription because this would have been a showstopper. However I’m pleased to see you are trying to address it. I think it’s going to be very important for people to be able to edit their webinars.
Thanks
Mike
No worries, we are looking at improving how recording is implemented in our products. Take a look at http://www.GoView.com, it’s still in early beta but works pretty well and can be used to capture a GoToMeeting or GoToWebinar session also.
Glenn, thanks for jumping in as a representative of Citrix!
If you are planning to edit your recorded GoToMeeting or GoToWebinar session, you can select in the software Preferences for the recording to be automatically converted into a standard WMV file. The GoToMeeting codec compresses the recording to keep the size down but for editing purposes or for sharing with Mac and Linux users you will want to convert it. You can then use Camtasia or a free application to convert it to any format you like. If you have questions we are on Twitter @GoToMeeting and @GoToWebinar
I’ve struggled with converting GoToMeeting files to FLVs for quite a while now.
I followed the instructions above and everything worked perfectly. Thank you very much.
This doesn’t seem to work. When I attempt to add the file using “wmstreamedt.exe”, I get a “The requested video codecs is not installed on this system” error.
I have installed the GotoMeeting Codecs several times. The videos run just fine outside Camtasia.
Thanks for the article though.
Hi there!
I stumbled upon your website when troubleshooting gotowebinar WMV edit in Camtasia. I have attempted to use the above method to ‘fix’ the wmv recorded by gotowebinar but get the following error when attempting to add source:
“The requested video codec is not installed on this system”
This error is strange because 1. I have the g2m codec installed, along with g2m software, 2. I can play the wmv in WMP.
I have searched the TechSmith forums high and low for possible answers with no success ;(
I do realize that this is a personal site and you may not have the time to troubleshoot other peoples problems, but if you have come across this error before and could provide any advice it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Paul

This has been an on going problem with GoToMeeting GoToWebinar for over 2 years. I too get the “The requested video codec is not installed on this system” error. Sometimes the wmv’s are editable, sometimes they are garbage. I think the only solution is to record the webinars using Camtasia or some other capturing software or to wait until some other company competes with GoTOWebinars pricepoint and jump ship.
Thanks for the near solution!
this didn’t work for me either. I also get the “The requested video codecs is not installed on this system” error using Microsofts Windows Media Stream Editor .
